Last week’s educational cycling video was all about cycling nutrition and how to fuel yourself while training. This week we discuss nutrition when you are actually on the bike.
I would have loved to get more specific with him on EXACTLY what you should eat or drink during your rides and races, but the problem with that is that it is so individualized. The bottom line is that you really have to get out and test things and try them out for yourself. What works for me or for Dave may not work for you and could actually hinder you if they don’t agree with your stomach.
There are some really great cycling nutrition tips in the video… I would say some of the top tips are:
1. DO NOT WAIT until you are hungry or thirsty before you eat or drink something because by then it is too late.
2. Focus on eating and drinking just a little at a time. For example, drink something at the 5’s and eat a little something at the 10’s. Don’t try to eat it all at once because you never know if you’ll have the chance to eat/drink when you think you will (i.e., long downhill) AND your stomach and body will appreciate a more sustained energy approach.
Definitely more great discussion in the video… so I’ll let you get to it!
